Doris Maxine Swords Poppler (granddaughter 8. Ann)) First female U.S. Attorney in Montana (1990 to 1993). Born in Billings, Montana, she served in the U.S. Navy 1942 to 1946; graduated from the University of Montana's Law School in 1948; later co-founded the state's first all-woman law firm. Intensely involved in local issues and served as a field representative for the National Indian Gaming Commission and as a member of the Montana Human Rights Commission. After a 22 year break from her legal career to raise a family, she returned to law with the Yellowstone County attorney's office; then along with retired judge Diane Barz and opened a law firm in Billings in 1973. She was appointed U.S. attorney in 1990 by President George H.W. Bush. Cause of death: cancer, in Billings, Montana.
